If you missed my interview on SYN’s Get Cereal in Melbourne early this morning, never fear! You too can now listen to me waking up live on air on their website (the hosts were practically bouncing off the walls with energy, I don’t know how they do it!). Or if you’d prefer to hear me in a more alert state of consciousness tune into Little Fish on JOY 94.9 this Saturday at 3pm. Alternatively you can bypass all my drivel all together and just rock up to my show at Yah Yah’s on Saturday night.

It’s my first Melbourne show with the band for 2012 and to celebrate this special occasion I’ve decided to drag three very talented horn players along for the ride. I’ve rearranged the trumpet and trombone charts to accommodate some funky sax lines and I’m really looking forward to hearing it being played in our first rehearsal together – during soundcheck on the night.

I’ll also consider this gig momentous because I’m ditching my beloved Korg organ (which I christened ‘Korgan’) in favor of my newly purchased 1960s Farfisa Compact…which I’m yet to nickname. I’m happy to take suggestions. Here’s something to get the creative juices flowing:

NZ Tour summary

Besides the weather, I can’t really fault much of my NZ tour. I really enjoyed performing a handful of my original songs with Tyra Hammond in Auckland. I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the people of Raglan – a place which admittedly I hadn’t heard of until we looked at where the tour might take me. Three shows in three days (and a radio interview on Radio Active 88.6 FM) in the close-knit music community of Wellington kept me busy.

I thought my exhaustion from the 9 hour bus ride from Raglan to Wellington was making me see things when I stepped off the bus. There were posters for my Matterhorn gig everywhere! If I wasn’t feeling the pressure to put on a good show already, I was now! Being told that it’s a prestigious venue which usually hosts highly regarded musicians just added to my worries. Thankfully my band and I delivered one of the most energetic and soulful performances we’ve given to date.

We made full use of Barrett Hocking (trumpet, percussion) from The Black Seeds & his mate Mike Isaacs (tenor sax, percussion) in our 10 minute improvised jazz/lounge intro… then it was straight into my new song Reflections, which has a reggae feel up until the very last few bars. While my usual stage antics were taking me to strange depths beneath my keyboard in the middle of a song, a kind audience member gave me a sip of their drink and offered to buy me a beer. 90 minutes into the performance, we rounded off the set with an extended rendition of These Walls – complete with brand new horn lines. The dancing crowd cheered for an encore.

The weather for most of the time we spent in Wellington was stormy. There was talk of moving Newtown Festival inside, but luckily the forecast rain held off and the sun shone during my set on the Wilson St Stage!

I’m really grateful for the opportunity to tour overseas again. My thanks to everyone who made another dream reality.
