Earliest musical memory?
Walking around the house as a small child playing rhythms on the claves we had. Occasionally I’d switch it up and jam out on the recorder with renditions of Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum Tree.
How long have you been playing your instrument?
14 years.
Biggest musical influence or idol?
I hate this question because there are always several, and you can’t narrow it down. I should say Virgil Donati though, drumming wise. Probably even a little bit in terms of philosophy as well. He is an incredibly wise man with an approach that is so inspiring.
Have you played or do you currently play with any other bands?
Absolutely, it’s what us musicians do, isn’t it? I can’t remember them all but I have to put a special mention to Free Parking during my primary school days.
Most memorable gig playing with Dan?
Depends in what context, but I’ll say Newcastle, because it went from a bemused crowd who were incredibly conservative in showing their appreciation (they were silent) to having people dancing on stage and playing Dan’s ‘board, and an overbearing security guard rushing to usher them all off stage. To cap it off of course, in true Australian pub style there was a physical altercation of some sort between some revellers.
Favourite hangover cure?
Staying hydrated enough the night before, so as to alleviate pressure on the liver and keep the brain wet.
Favourite song to play live?
Weathered Mind
Hardest song to play live?
Weekends, the long version with the horns. Stylistic variation, tempo & groove changes, start-stop bits and a big dynamic range, it certainly keeps me on my toes.
How did you come to be a part of Dan’s band?
Dan asked me one day, “Hey, do you want to play drums for me?” to which I replied, “Sure.” It doesn’t get much simpler than that. In fact I think it was over MSN Messenger that he asked.
Any funny band stories to share with us?
Memories of our little tour pop up, but no real stories. I do remember one of our first gigs which was at Ding Dong Lounge, and during Mad As A Hatter, there was this guy who was dancing like he was going to be shot at dawn and it was his last chance to express himself physically. It was hilarious to watch him whilst playing. I think he was also inebriated.
